Lincoln’s History and the Local Area

Situated in the East Midlands, Lincoln is a historic city that sits on the eastern edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. Its origins date back to Roman times, and since its founding, Lincoln has seen some important historical moments, including the Battle of Lincoln in 1141, where King Stephen was taken prisoner.

It’s also home to one of the best preserved and most admired gothic cathedrals in all of Europe, the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln, and was once the tallest building in the world.

Lincoln Castle is another important historical site within the city, built in 1068 by William the Conqueror. It’s home to one of only four surviving copies of the Magna Carta.

Since then, Lincoln has continued to grow to a city with a population of more than 100,000 people. While it still features mediaeval streets and the historical area of Bailgate, Lincoln is now home to many modern features and institutions, such as the University of Lincoln and the Lincoln Railway station. The modern A46 and A15 make travelling to and from the city easy.
